【簡介】
Dominik Merdes studied pharmacy, literature, and the history of science. In his doctoral thesis, he explores the emergence of the disease kala-azar in Assam and of the antimonials, a group of drugs that were early products of modern chemotherapy. His cartographic analysis combines the concept of machinic assemblage by Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari with feminist and postcolonial theories. In the frame of the joint research project Materialities of Medical Culture in/between Europe and East Asia, he continues to inquire parasitological practices in southern China. This lecture asks how knowledge on worm diseases such as hookworm disease and schistosomiasis unfolded between different concepts of development, water, and fluid encounters in early 20th century China.
Chun-Yi Ho's research interests address the relationship between environmental data and governance, the materiality of agriculture, and water resource development in post-war East Asia. His current writing focuses on the transformation of hydrogeology, geological survey method, and the underground world's ontology in the 1980s-1990s Taiwan. Additionally, He is collaborating with Prof. Po-Yi Hung, Department of Geography, NTU, on the politics of fishing quota distribution. He has published several works in journals such as Singapore Journal of Tropical Geography, Journal of Geographical Science, and Journal of Archaeology and Anthropology. The lecture discusses how Taiwan's "underground water crisis" was influenced by global geopolitics and local verticality, specifically in the context of the Eastern Asia Cold War. It examines how the interactions between local and global actors involved in managing groundwater resources impacted the production of verticality through the pursuit of legibility in the underground world, considering the varying needs and scales of different actors.
